Pennsylvania farmers have until Friday to apply for a permit to grow industrial hemp this year. Promoters say the crop could revolutionize the state's agriculture.
The new Industrial Hemp Research Pilot Program allows for up to 5,000 acres in the state to be planted with the crop, which once was banned because it belongs to the cannabis family, the same family that produces marijuana. The type of hemp grown for industrial uses does not have enough of the psychoactive ingredient THC to make anyone high.

The Puritans planted it,Betsy Ross made the first American flag from it, Ben Franklin used it for his kite string on the night he discovered electricity, Co.William Byrd called it "the 'Darling' of all my projects", George Washington grew it in his own backyard as did Thomas Jefferson. Robert Beverley predicted the plant "will be of the greatest consequence to us" meaning the people of the US.

It was a sustainable fiber that was strong, weather resistant, versatile, cost effective and because it requires little water to grow and no pesticides it was easy on the environment.
It was made into cloth for clothing, flags, furniture, rugs and tents. It was used as legal tender, strong rope, fertilizer, nutritious food, and health supplements.

So why after so many years of promoting this miracle fiber it became banned in some states in the Marijuana Tax Act in 1937 and completely illegal to grow in the late 1960's. Some say it interfered with the heavy polyester producers of the time but it was banned by The Controlled Substances Act even though it was long known as distinctly different from marijuana.
Now Hemp is making it's way back into the US as a new innovative fiber. In recent years state bills are being passed to allow farmers to grow Hemp for the first time in almost 80 years! Hopefully it is here to stay...
"For all of those who have never considered wearing a piece of clothing made out of hemp, it's time you look at some brands worldwide that are making an impact in the fashion industry. After doing so, you definitely are going to start looking differently at this great fabric, which is one of the most durable of natural fibers."
